About EDW

Mission

“European Drinking Water” (EDW) is an alliance of trade associations representing industries supplying products or materials used in drinking water applications and municipal drinking water supply in Europe. With the broad knowledge of its members, covering both the individual elements of the supply chain and the wide range of drinking water applications, that initiative has established itself as the voice of the industry and is now a recognised partner for legislators, regulators, and other stakeholders.

EDW works to promote the harmonisation of EU regulatory requirements of substances, materials and products used in drinking water applications and to ensure the harmonised implementation of the provisions of Article 11 of the EU Drinking Water Directive (minimum hygiene requirements for materials in contact with water intended for human consumption). EDW believes that such harmonised measures are key to the objective of the Drinking Water Directive: protect human health from the adverse effects of any contamination of water intended for human consumption by ensuring that it is wholesome and clean, and to improve access to water intended for human consumption.

EDW is committed to pursue the practical feasibility of all measures by the market actors to achieve these objectives throughout the internal market, where the free movement of goods should be guaranteed and not hindered by specific national measures. To achieve this goal, EDW continuously works with policymakers, regulators, and other relevant stakeholders through open and science-driven dialogue.

Focus of work

Now that the recast of the EU Drinking Water Directive has come into force in 2021 and the regulatory package (delegated and implementing acts), which supplements and specifies Article 11 of the Directive, has been published in the Official Journal of the EU in April 2024, the main focus of EDW is now on

  • helping to shape the guidance documents required for the practical implementation of the requirements
  • the dialog with the future notified bodies
  • informing member associations and member companies about the new European requirements
